North Greene’s Lady Huskies turned back Grainger’s fourth quarter rally and knocked off the Grizzlies 48-40 in by far the most exciting game of Day 1 of the Classic.

After losing to Grainger in overtime in an early season matchup, the Huskies got 23 points from Sonya Wagner, who hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor and 8-of-9 at the foul line.

North Greene, with Zoe Sanders getting in some minutes, her first action since being injured in that earlier meeting with Grainger, held a 36-24 lead with 6:30 left in the game. But the Grizz refused to fold and took advantage of a couple of 3-pointers from Adison Hayes down the stretch to carve the gap down to 39-37 with 4:04 remaining.

But that would be as close as they would get. Wagner made a basket with 2:42 left, and after a Grainger miss, Sanders buried a pair of free throws to up the lead to 43-37. A 3-pointer by Marly Tanner cut it to 43-40, but the Huskies made 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to ice the victory.

Adison Hayes scored 14 points to lead Grainger.

North Greene held the lead most of the way, up 21-13 at halftime and 34-22 entering the final quarter.

The Huskies will take on Upperman in the winner’s bracket today at 1:30. Grainger will play West Greene Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the loser’s bracket.
