(Game 34, Sixth Place)
Cocke County 42, Knox Catholic 33
If you had walked into the gym without knowing the circumstances, you would probably have thought that Cocke County and Catholic were playing for a championship with the intensity that both teams were showing.
Actually it was the battle for sixth place, a furious clash that Cocke County won over Catholic 42-33 in a game that was much more about defensive intensity and who could survive the storm than about any offense.
The Lady Red got just enough, although only one player in the game hit double figures, and that was only 10 points by Shakyra Reed of Cocke County. Blakelyn Clevenger scored nine and Karmine Carmichael got eight.
Catholic’s best was Amaya Reed with nine and Maggie Franca and Sydney English with eight apiece.
A spurt toward the end of the third quarter that leaked into the final period was all the Lady Red would need. They managed a 35-26 lead by the start of the fourth, then got a 3-pointer from Javin Campbell and a bucket from Carmichael to seemingly take over at 40-26.
But the Lady Red would go the final six minutes of the game and net only two more points, as the Irish turned up the heat. But Catholic could get no closer than seven points as the Lady Red defense was good as well, forcing four Irish turnovers.
