Old county rivals West Greene and Chuckey-Doak staged a duel in the morning opener Friday at Hal Henard Gym, with the Lady Buffs holding on for a 55-54 victory.

The game was never out of reach for either team. The Buffs led 13-10 after one and the Knights held a 30-26 halftime edge and still maintained a 42-40 lead going into the final period.

It was 49-48 with 2:45 left, and West Greene’s Breanna Ellis proceeded to knock down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Buffs a 55-50 lead with a minute remaining. A three by Saniah Atchison of C-D with 10 seconds to go had the lead cut to 55-54, and the Knights got the ball back with a final shot, but it wouldn’t fall and the Buffs exited with a victory.

The Buffs got balanced scoring, as Madi Brown scored 14 with 10 rebounds and Ellis also accounted for 14. Hailey Ripley scored 12. The Buffs made 13 3-pointers in the game, shooting 59 percent from behind the arc (13-22).

Atchison scored 16 to pace the Lady Knights while Tavyn Southerland scored nine.
