(Game 20, Quarterfinal) Spring Garden (Ala.) 51, Upperman 38

Unbeaten Spring Garden of Alabama, led by one of that state’s most veteran and successful coaches in Ricky Austin, turned some tournament heads by their commanding 51-38 win over Upperman, also coached by a veteran in Dana McWilliams who has had enormous success at the school located in Baxter, just west of Cookeville.

The Panthers of Spring Garden seemed to frustrate the Bees both offensively and defensively in building up a 20-point lead through three quarters (42-22) before settling for keeping the clock running in the fourth quarter.

Ace Austin, the Alabama signee and four-time All-Stater (winning her first All-State honor as an 8th grader), scored 14 points and ran the show for the winners. She got great help from Maggie Jarrett, who hit six 3-pointers and tallied 20 points.

Upperman, who set records with their 3-pointers made in their opening round tournament game, got 10 points each from Korra Bass and Taylor Dolente, but they could make only 6-of-22 from long range in this game.

Spring Garden (16-0) moves on to the Monday evening tournament semifinal round.
