The Cocke County girls earned sixth place in the tournament with a hard-fought 59-53 decision over Spring Valley, W.Va.

It was a tight game from the start. Cocke County led 27-26 at halftime and continued to lead the entire second half, although Spring Valley moved within a field goal of taking the lead. When Brooklyn Ellis nailed a three from the corner with 2:30 left in the contest, Spring Valley was within 46-45, but the Lady Red’s Chloe Niethammer answered with a three of her own to open it back up to 49-45.

Cocke County spent the rest of the contest shooting free throws, and they made 10 in a row in the final two minutes.

Brooklyn Clevenger had a big game with 20 points, hitting all nine foul shots she attempted. Karmine Carmichael scored 12 and raked in 16 rebounds. Niethammer scored 11 off the bench.

Spring Valley’s Sophie Hutchison set a new Ladies Classic record with steals. She picked off five more in this game to give her 29 for the tournament, bypassing the old record of 27. She also scored 14 points. Brooklyn Ellis led her team in points with 24.
