The Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic will celebrate its 34th event this year from December 26-30, 2023, at Hal Henard Gymnasium in Greeneville, Tennessee. The Town of Greeneville and the Greeneville Parks & Recreation Department took over the reins of the event in 2019 with support from the Greene County Partnership and other local agencies. The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Greeneville City School System and many local businesses will be helping at the 2023 event.
This year’s tournament will consist of 20 teams, with games over 5 days. The Ladies Classic traditionally brings together some of the top girls’ basketball teams in Tennessee as well as neighboring states to battle for the coveted crown. All five of the local teams – Greeneville, South Greene, West Greene, Chuckey-Doak and North Greene – will participate, while other squads considered as “regional” teams will be Daniel Boone, Elizabethton, Cocke County, Knox Catholic, Knox Bearden, Morristown West, Oak Ridge, and Knox Webb. Out of town teams include Jackson Southside, Bartlett and Upperman from Tennessee, Marist School of Georgia, The Steward School of Virginia and two teams from Kentucky -George Rogers Clark and Mercy Academy. “We feel we have put together a group of high-quality teams that will provide plenty of excitement and entertainment for our local basketball fans,” stated Butch Patterson, the 2023 Tournament Director and director for the Greeneville Parks & Recreation. “We could not do this event without the support from the Town of Greeneville, the Greene County Commission and the local school systems,” he added.
Gary Compton of Andrew Johnson Bank and a Co-Chairman for the event stated that, “We are proud to be involved with the event again this year, and it has been a community effort for many years to get us to the point of being one of the most recognized women’s high school tournaments in the South. A special thanks to The Greeneville Sun, Radio Greeneville and the Greene County Partnership and the hundreds of volunteers for all they have done over the years to make this an annual the success it has become today.”
