Game 25 – South Greene 65, Chuckey-Doak 62

The Chuckey-Doak Lady Knights came within an eyelash of pulling off one of their biggest victories in a number of years, but gritty county rival South Greene battled back from a deficit of as much as 17 points to take a 65-62 win Friday.

South Greene stormed back as Coach Kyle Donahue’s Knights played solid for the first half and seemed to grab every loose ball, made shots and just played extremely well in pulling away from the Rebels. The score was 30-24 at intermission, and C-D pulled ahead by a 45-28 margin in the third before shots began to fall for South Greene late in the period.

The Rebs finally got even and pulled ahead by a point with 2:31 left in the game. After Layla Fox banked in a layup with about a minute remaining the score was knotted at 62-62. A free throw by SG’s Emma Cutshall put the Rebs up 63-62, then a missed shot gave the ball back to the Rebs and Hailey Brooks calmly planted two foul shots with 12 seconds left to up the lead to 65-62.

South Greene had three fouls to give before putting the Knights into a free throw situation, and they used all of them to keep burning the clock a few seconds at a time and got the time down to four seconds. C-D got the ball inbounds but could not get a clean look at the bucket before time expired.

Brooks led the Rebs with 19 points, four assists and three steals. Ryleigh Gregg hit four 3-pointers and totaled 14. Kortnei Bailey finished with 10 points and six assists, and Ava Clark had nine points and nine rebounds.

Chuckey-Doak got a career best and game-high 24 points from Tavyn Southerland, including four 3-pointers. She also had eight rebounds. Kennedy Brown scored 10 and Saniah Atchison added eight.
