A last-second 3-point shot attempt by Cleveland bounded off the rim and Greeneville High escaped with a 58-56 win to make it to the tournament quarterfinals against South Laurel (Ky.) Wednesday night.
The Lady Devils held the upper hand until the final four minutes of the game when Cleveland caught up, and the remainder of the game was a back-and-forth battle.
The Raiders never led in the contest until only 2:03 remained in the contest when Katie Moore converted a 3-point play to put them up 52-51. The lead see-sawed the rest of the way.
Lauren Bailey of the Devils scored 26 on the night and was especially clutch down the stretch, scoring 12 of the final GHS 14 points. Down 56-55 with 27 seconds left, she battled her way for a layup and was fouled, made the free toss for a 58-56 lead.
With 12 seconds left, Cleveland inbounded the ball and went for the final shot, which was a clean 3-point attempt from the left corner but it hit the rim and bounded away, leaving the Devils with a victory to improve to 12-1 on the season.
In addition to the 26 by Bailey, Lindy Carter scored 15 for the winners.
Cleveland got 19 points from Moore and 11 from Addison Hurst.
